Tip: Handling A Call From A Recruiter.

You have posted your resume on various career web sites with the expectation that a recruiter will contact you for an interview. More often than not, the recruiter will call when you least expect it. However, given that this is the first time the recruiter makes direct contact, the phone interview is crucial when searching for a new job.

How should you handle the call and what should you say?

Here are a few important guidelines:
  • Be calm and positive.
The call should not seem rehearsed, but you should feel comfortable and calm. If your tone is jovial and positive, the recruiter will immediately develop a positive impression. If you need a moment to collect your thoughts, ask the recruiter if he or she could hold for a brief moment. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
  • Let the recruiter control the interview.
Listen to the recruiter and let he or she do most of the talking. When asked questions, make sure you provide a clear, yet concise, answer. Make sure you expand on Yes or No questions.
  • Ask intelligent questions.
When given the opportunity, ask questions that will reflect your interest and intelligence. Ask questions like: "What strengths are important to ensure I meet company expectations in this role." Many times, you can gather what characteristics the ideal candidate has in the eyes of the recruiter. You can utilize this information during your on-site interview.
  • Request contact information.
If the recruiter does not provide his contact information, make sure you obtain this information at the end of the call. For an example, "Should I have additional questions for you about this position- or the on-site interview, could I have your phone number and email address." Further, you will be able to use this information to follow-up in the near future.
