Picking and Choosing

You may have heard recent talk about the upswing the economy is experiencing. Even if you’re unsure what this really means,“upswing” still sounds encouraging. And it is encouraging, because it could mean your job search will be easier. That is definitely good news.

But today’s economy is a fickle thing. In the early stages of improvement, it is still very vulnerable. And though we may not be financial analysts here, we feel that this article is a little premature. Getting picky is a luxury that some job seekers may not be able to afford, depending on their circumstances. It could also mean that you miss out on some excellent learning experiences in areas that you may not be familiar with and therefore chose not to pursue. But we will agree with this—feeling out a position before accepting it is important. Job satisfaction can be one of the most important factors influencing a person’s happiness, so it’s very imperative that you bear in mind your interests and strengths while seeking employment. And seeking a job that plays up to your strengths could mean faster upward mobility in the company. (You should also bear in mind other, more personal factors. For example, if you are severely allergic to animals, working in a vet’s office just isn’t a wise idea.) So, SnagAJob’s current bottom line on this issue, given the job market and the economy? Consider your options carefully before you get too choosey. Even if the first job that comes along isn’t ideal or perfect for you, think twice before you turn it down. If it turns out to be somewhat different than you thought, you still will learn something from the experience. And it’s definitely better than not having a job at all.
